Many girls are in love with the idea of being in love. They long for the fluttery heart, the quickened pulse, and for the part of the movie when he swoops her up in his arms as the orchestra music swells.
But there’s much more to it than those idealized moments. We need to be taught the real difference between romance and relationships. That abstinence isn’t the only hallmark of a healthy relationship. And that instead of looking for tips on how to nab “the right guy,” we're better off looking for ways to become a woman of character.
Proverbs 31:17 says that a woman of character “girds herself with strength [spiritual, mental, and physical fitness for her God-given task] and makes her arms strong and firm”.
This is the starting place for healthy young women and healthy relationships. When we are girded with spiritual and mental strength, it’s so much easier for us to navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of teen relationships. When we see ourselves as cherished daughters of God, we know our worth and are much less likely to let ourselves be devalued in a relationship. And that puts us in a much better place to experience the puppy love of today and the true love that awaits us down the road.
